The people filling the roles listed below are responsible for making decisions around thunderstorms and lightning safety (when to stop activities, when to move students to safe locations, and to determine when/if it is safe to resume activities):

• Curricular Activities: Teacher
• Intramurals Activities: Teacher/Intramural supervisor
• Interschool Competitions and Practices: Teacher/Coach in consultation with official (for competitions)
• Outdoor Education Trips: Teacher in consultation with trip leader
• Off-Site Activity Providers: Teacher in consultation with facility manager/director
• Camps: Teacher in consultation with camp director

A lightning response plan must be developed in advance of outdoor activities. The following must be taken into consideration:

• Potential Thunderstorms
• Communications to Students
• Outdoor Activity Planning
• Procedures When Safe Indoor Shelters are Unavailable
• Procedures for Water-Based Activities
• Procedures for Hiking/Backpacking
• First Aid for Lightning Injuries
• Resumption of the Activity
