Description
The sample checklist is a tool that can be used by Supervisory Officers to identify their responsibility in providing a safe physical activity program within their school division that meets Manitoba Physical Activity Safety in Schools standards. The sample checklist can also be used by the directors of Supervisory Officers and/or Superintendents to identify Supervisory Officer responsibilities.
Communication
- Establish a process to communicate with school board staff, students, and stakeholders (for example, parents, community partners) the Manitoba Physical Activity Safety in Schools standards. Additionally communicate with stakeholders how the school board uses the standards to provide safe Health and Physical Education Programs (curricular, intramural, interschool).
- Communicate with stakeholders on how to access school board concussion protocols and localized concussion education resources.
- Where appropriate provide additional resources to assist in the implementation of safe Health and Physical Education Programs and/or concussion protocols.
Staff Training, Student Learning, Stakeholder Information
- Establish a consistent school board approach to training school board staff, educating students and informing stakeholders on Manitoba Physical Activity Safety in Schools.
- Establish a process to identify the information and training needs of school staff and stakeholders for Health and Physical Education Programs and/or concussion protocol at the school board and school level.
- Determine the format of training that the school board will use (for example, electronic, staff meetings, staff review).
- Provide information and training regarding Health and Physical Education Programs (curricular, intramural, interschool) to school board staff that are responsible for these programs.
- Provide concussion information to stakeholders (for example, school administrators, secondary H&PE department heads, teachers, coaches, substitute teachers, new teachers)
- Plan, develop and provide system level information, instruction and resources to providers of Health and Physical Education Programs and concussion protocol (for example, awareness, prevention, identification and management).
- Provide relevant information and resources to school administrators if they are providing relevant training for school staff.
- Provide relevant information and resources to school administrators/teachers if they are providing relevant training for students.
Documentation
- Establish a system wide process to record and retain documentation of training sessions, such as the date, time, summary of content, and the particpants attendance.
- Establish a process to ensure those absent receive appropriate content at the earliest opportunity.
Inspections (and other means of hazard identification)
- Establish a process to have school facilities and equipment used for Health and Physical Education Programs inspected on a regular basis by the school board’s Facilities Department and/or approved third party provider.
- Establish a process to review each school’s inspection results and ensure corrective actions are taken.
- Share each school’s inspection results with the principal and ensure corrective actions are completed.
First aid Plan and Emergency First Aid Response
- Communicate to school administrators the school board’s First Aid Plan and Emergency First Aid Response.
Accident Investigation and Reporting
- Train school administrators how to use the school board’s accident reporting system.
- Establish a process to review the data provided through the accident reporting system, identify areas of concern, and possible corrective actions.
- Share accident reporting system data with school administrators and suggested corrective actions.
- During school visits, discuss safety concerns with school administrators and teachers.
Safety (Annual Process)
At the beginning of the school year:
- Review Manitoba Physical Activity Safety in Schools yearly revisions.
- Communicate revisions to relevant school staff and stakeholders.
- Where appropriate make adjustments to school board safety standards and communicate these adjustments to stakeholders.
- During the school year:
- Provide opportunities for school staff to identify physical activity safety concerns. Investigate the concerns and provide an appropriate response/action.
- Identify content updates/revisions that MPASS should consider for the following year. Communicate those suggestions through the “Modify the Safety Standards” function.
- End of the term/year:
- Establish a process to review safety data (for example, concerns, corrective actions, suggested changes to MPASS.
- Provide training for school administrators, department heads, teachers, coaches, substitute teachers, new teachers.
