Tools & Resources
Description
Consider the following:
- Inspection: Inspect the equipment (consult the Sample Safety Checklist – Gymnasium Equipment) prior to use to ensure it is in good working order after the long school closure (for example, balls properly inflated) and remove equipment that is not safe.
- First Aid Kit: Check that the first aid kit contains school board required personal protective equipment (for example, medical mask, eye protection, and medical gloves in case a student requires first aid).
- Hand Hygiene: Focus on regular hand hygiene to reduce the risk of infection from high touch surfaces (including sports equipment). Check that there is a readily available, well stocked supply of hand hygiene products around learning spaces (for example, in the physical education office, gymnasium, change rooms). Place hand hygiene products away from the activity area to avoid spilled hand hygiene products on the floor of the activity area.
- Respiratory Safety: Where applicable, the use of portable microphones/voice amplifiers may be considered to minimize the need to shout/project.
- Cleaning/Disinfection: Be knowledgeable of school board/school procedures for who is responsible for the disinfection of equipment and the types of disinfecting products to be used.
- High Touch Surfaces (for example, surfaces that are frequently touched by multiple students throughout the day): when equipment considered to be a high touch surface (for example, benches, gymnastic mats) is in use, cleaning plus disinfecting twice daily is suggested at a minimum (more frequently may be necessary depending on frequency of use and extent of soilage).
- Garbage Receptacle: Place a garbage receptacle or container in or near the activity area so used and/or disposable items can be properly discarded (for example, cleaning/disinfecting materials).
