Description
In addition to the level of supervision required by the interschool athletic activity/sport pages (elementary, secondary) of the Ontario Physical Activity Safety Standards in Education (OPASSE), it is important to monitor and remind students to:
- maintain appropriate physical distancing prior to and after trainings, practices, and competitions (for example, change room, arrival/departure);
- adhere to change room and facility procedures (for example, entrance, exit);
- sanitize hands before and after using equipment; and
- refrain from group celebrations during activities/sports (for example, handshakes, high fives, fist bumps).
Coaches and Coach Liaisons (teacher supervisors):
- follow school board personal protective equipment procedures during trainings, practices, and competitions.
- communicate with students and minimize the need to shout/project. Consider using:
- alternative hand operated (electronic or mechanical) whistles.
- portable microphones/voice amplifiers.
- check that all certifications required for activities/sports are up to date and have not expired (for example, first aid certification, NCCP or equivalent, safe contact training for Football – Tackle)
Official/Referees:
- When appropriate (for example, prior to sport season beginning or prior to competition), it is important to:
- share school/school board/athletic association policies and procedures related to COVID-19 safety for interschool athletic activities with the appropriate official/referee associations.
- review any additional COVID-19 safety requirements from the official/referee association.
- Follow school board/athletic association and official associations COVID-19 safety procedures regarding:
- use of personal protective equipment (for example, masking);
- hygiene practices (for example, respiratory etiquette, hand sanitizing, use of hand operated whistles);
- cleaning and disinfecting of equipment; and
- physical distancing practices (for example, where appropriate, officials should maintain physical distancing before, during and after competition).
